Goodreads’ Summary

The riveting new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Liar.

“She stood in the deep, dark woods, breath shallow and cold prickling over her skin despite the hot, heavy air. She took a step back, then two, as the urge to run fell over her.”

Naomi Bowes lost her innocence the night she followed her father into the woods. In freeing the girl trapped in the root cellar, Naomi revealed the horrible extent of her father’s crimes and made him infamous. No matter how close she gets to happiness, she can’t outrun the sins of Thomas David Bowes.

Now a successful photographer living under the name Naomi Carson, she has found a place that calls to her, a rambling old house in need of repair, thousands of miles away from everything she’s ever known. Naomi wants to embrace the solitude, but the kindly residents of Sunrise Cove keep forcing her to open up—especially the determined Xander Keaton.

Naomi can feel her defenses failing, and knows that the connection her new life offers is something she’s always secretly craved. But the sins of her father can become an obsession, and, as she’s learned time and again, her past is never more than a nightmare away.

“People don’t always know people close to them the way they think they do” (140).” This quote from The Obsession focuses the plot line which sparked my interest in the novel from the first few pages. This novel was my first Nora Roberts’ book and it did not disappoint.

From the first pages of the novel, Roberts started developing Naomi’s character and a thorough plot that keeps readers engaged until the last pages of the novel. As with most novels, the book also included a romantic interest, which makes books more enjoyable.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and would highly recommend it to others. My favorite parts of the novel were the characters and romance.

“I thought he was a friend. But nobody stays your friend when they find out who you are” (76).”

“People don’t always know people close to them the way they think they do” (140).”

“Exactly. It’s interesting – what she doesn’t say. It’s interesting” (162).”

“Once the words are on the page, the image printed, it becomes what’s true” (240).

“They’re not so different, words and pictures. Both freeze moments, both stay with you long after the moment’s over” (240).”

“No, Naomi thought, you don’t always know what lives with you” (287).”

“Or he lives a lot of his life tearing down those dark places” (340).”
